Alpe d'Huez is located at 1,850m above the market town of Le Bourg-d'Oisans. The closest airport is Grenoble which has a transfer time of around a one hour forty minutes based on normal road conditions. The Alpe d’Huez glacier ensures the snow is sufficient for a long winter season and there are also 1033 snow cannons available to help out if required. The Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine has 249km of pisted runs with the highest peak being the Pic Blanc at 3,300m and it's possible to ski from the cable car station down to the Tunnel Black run with its 35 degree gradient or the Sarenne black run which at 16 kilometres long is the longest black piste in Europe. Many off-piste opportunities exist and you can also arrange heli-skiing if you wish from the resort's altiport. The other villages connecting to Alpe d'Huez are Auris, Villard Reculas and Vaujany. There is no shortage of sunshine at this resort with an average of 300 sunny days a year so most of the available 32,000 beds in resort get reserved. If you want a few hours away from the slopes then why not try ice skating, go to the cinema, check out the sports centre for some swimming, climbing, badminton or weight training or try some ice driving or para-gliding.
